A poem I wrote…
“Come out of hiding”
She hid the pain behind her smile,
A mask she’d worn for quite a while.
“Fake it till you make it,” they’d say,
There didn’t seem to be another way.
And so she tried, and she tried,
To hold back the tears in her eyes.
The aching deep within her heart—
The very thing that was meant to keep her alive—Felt more like a monster dressed in disguise.
She felt less alone when surrounded by sound,
Even in turmoil, some comfort was found.
A moment of relief in a world of pretending.
Longing to keep the image she wore,
But hiding had cost her more and more.
The toll weighed heavy upon her mind,
So she set out for the freedom she needed to find.
She tried to live a story not hers,
’Til she learned to hold to her journey’s course.
Even when burdens felt too much to bear,
She found strength still waiting there.
It took time to carve out a new space,
But she learned it was right to go at her pace.
Letting go of locked-up feelings,
And breathing in peace and healing.
Though she still mourns the girl she once knew,
And the dreams she had to surrender too,
She’s reminded with joy, and soft celebration,
Of the girl she’s become through transformation.
Maybe she had to lose what she had,
Be stripped of the details she clung to so bad,
So she could uncover what truly matters.
Perhaps she lost the place once secure,
The melody written in her song.
But she had to step outside her comfort zone,
To discover where she truly belonged.
Piece by piece, she set herself free,
Coming out of hiding, learning to be.
With every step, she found she was enough,
Still fighting, but standing in love.
